Home Credit: a payment API partners can read, test and connect

Partner integrations of Home Credit's installment API took too long. We audited the API, walked the onboarding as a developer and ranked the fixes.

An installment API that partners struggled to connect

Home Credit is a Czech consumer-finance provider. Its payment API lets e-commerce partners offer installment sales at checkout. The service has two audiences: the customer choosing how to pay, and the developer at the partner’s store who has to connect to it first.

The second audience was waiting. Integrations ran long. Documentation lived in several places, a sandbox and integration libraries were missing, and onboarding asked more of a developer than the newer buy-now-pay-later providers did. Home Credit needed to know which modernization work would pay off first, before committing a team to it.

What partner growth depended on

  • A clear route from first evaluation to a working integration
  • Tools that let a store developer test installment sales safely
  • Onboarding that serves partners as well as end customers

What the assessment had to untangle

  • REST API design, authentication and error handling
  • Documentation spread across several locations
  • The missing sandbox, integration libraries and customer-facing tools

We integrated the API the way a partner would

We audited the existing REST API against current architectural practice and benchmarked the integration journeys of the key competitors. Then we simulated onboarding from an external developer’s perspective: found the documentation, tried to test a call, hit the same walls a partner hits.

The walk-through tied each technical finding to a real step in the partner journey. We ordered the results into a prioritized development plan covering developer documentation, test tooling, integration libraries, customer-facing tools, authentication and error handling.

What we recommended for developers

A central developer portal with unified documentation and a sandbox, plus SDKs and plugins for the e-commerce platforms partners already use. An SDK is a packaged set of code and guidance that shortens common integration work.

What we recommended for the payment journey

Accessible frontend tools such as an installment calculator, together with changes to authentication and error handling. Developer onboarding and the customer’s checkout are one journey, and the plan treats them that way.

To make our cooperation with our partners better and more effective, we chose Techmates because they have extensive knowledge of third-party integrations and a great deal of experience from the e-commerce world. The output they delivered pleasantly surprised us, and what we probably appreciate most now is the fact that we can apply the improvements with our in-house team and are not pushed into implementation by an external partner.

A ranked plan Home Credit’s own team can execute

Home Credit has a technical audit, a competitor benchmark, an onboarding assessment and a modernization roadmap. The portal, sandbox, libraries, customer tools and authentication changes are the next steps in that plan, ordered by priority, and the in-house team sets the pace.
